Diet Dr Pepper vs Dr Pepper Zero: every flavor side by side
Diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper Zero Sugar have the same nutrition label: 0 calories, 0 g sugar, 60 mg sodium and 41 mg caffeine per 12 fl oz can. The difference is the sweetener. Diet uses aspartame alone. Zero Sugar (the full name of Dr Pepper Zero) blends aspartame with acesulfame potassium, known as Ace-K, and adds sodium phosphate. Which one tastes more like regular Dr Pepper is the real argument, and blind tests do not settle it.
By The Pepper Man. Last checked against Keurig Dr Pepper's labels on October 25, 2026.
Below, the two labels sit next to each other with the original for scale, and you can swap in any of the 18 current flavors: calories, sugar in grams and teaspoons, caffeine, sodium, sweeteners and the ingredient lists in label order. Download the table as an image or a spreadsheet, and work out what your daily cans add up to. Every can figure is the 12 fl oz label as Keurig Dr Pepperpublishes it, read from the same source each flavor page cites; the 20 fl oz row, where there is one, comes from that bottle's own label and links to it. Two regional flavors have no official panel, so their rows come from the printed can label and say so.

What is the difference between Diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper Zero?
On the nutrition panel, nothing; the figures are in the table above. The ingredient lists are where they part ways. Diet Dr Pepper has seven ingredients and one sweetener, aspartame. Dr Pepper Zero Sugar has nine: it adds acesulfame potassium as a second sweetener and sodium phosphate, the same pairing every other Zero Sugar flavor uses. Aspartame and Ace-K are both high-intensity sweeteners, each roughly 200 times sweeter than sugar according to the FDA, which is why a can needs so little of them that the calorie count rounds to zero.
That second sweetener is the recipe difference. Keurig Dr Pepper launched Zero Sugar in April 2021with the line that it "delivers all the flavor consumers deserve", and the brand promises the same 23 flavors for both cans. Both cans print "Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine" because of the aspartame, so anyone with phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid both. The sweeteners themselves are covered in what sweetener is in Diet Dr Pepper.
One practical difference is the caffeine-free option. Diet has a twin, Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper, and Zero Sugar does not. If you want no sugar and no caffeine, Diet is the family to shop in.
Does Diet Dr Pepper or Dr Pepper Zero taste more like regular Dr Pepper?
Keurig Dr Pepper does not pick a side: its product copy promises the 23 flavors for both cans. The idea that Zero Sugar is the closer match comes from outside the company. The Takeoutsays the Ace-K blend gives Zero Sugar "more of that signature 23-flavor depth", and describes aspartame-only diet recipes as sharper. Diet has chased the same target for longer: according to the Dr Pepper Museum, its formula was changed in 1991 "to make it taste more like regular Dr Pepper."
Blind tests do not settle it. When Rhett and Link tried the two on Good Mythical Morning, as Sporked wrote it up, Rhett, who named Diet Dr Pepper as one of his go-to drinks, guessed wrong about which cup was which and preferred the Zero Sugar; Link preferred the Diet. The Takeout puts this down to flavor memory: the version you already drink sets the benchmark, and the other one can read as too sweet or too sharp by comparison.
What do Dr Pepper drinkers say?
The pages that rank for this question are arguments, not verdicts. When I checked the US results on October 25, 2026, the top one was a Reddit r/Soda threadtitled "Change my mind: Diet Dr. Pepper is the best diet soda", followed by Facebook posts asking whether Zero Sugar is "any good" and "similar to Diet Dr Pepper". I have no taste test of my own to add, so the fair summary is: same label, different sweetener, and the can you already drink tends to win.
Why is one called Diet and the other Zero Sugar?
Mostly marketing, and Dr Pepper has renamed its diet can before. According to the Dr Pepper Museum, the name changed to Sugar Free Dr Pepper in 1971 and went back to Diet Dr Pepper in 1986 "after research showed that increasingly health conscious Americans preferred drinks labeled diet." The formula moved to 100% aspartame in 1987 and was reworked in 1991, and in 2011 the brand tried Dr Pepper TEN, a ten-calorie can, before Zero Sugar arrived in 2021.
Since then the word diet has fallen out of favor. Mental Flossquotes PepsiCo North America's chief marketing officer, Greg Lyons, via Taste of Home: "No Gen Z wants to be on a diet these days." The Takeout says brands moved to zero sugar "hoping to dodge outdated connotations of dieting." On the label the two Dr Pepper cans are the same, which matches Mental Floss's conclusion that there tends to be little difference, health-wise, between a diet soda and its zero-sugar counterpart.
Diet Dr Pepper vs regular Dr Pepper: how much sugar is the difference?
39 g against 0 g. A 12 fl oz can of original Dr Pepper carries 39 g of added sugar, about 10 teaspoons. That is 78% of the daily value on the label, and more than the American Heart Association's daily limit for women (25 g) or men (36 g). Diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper Zero Sugar carry none. The caffeine is the same 41 mg in all three, so switching does not change your caffeine.
The same holds across most of the lineup. Blackberry, Cream Soda, Strawberries & Cream and Creamy Coconut each come as a full-sugar can at 39 g and a Zero Sugar can at 0 g, with about 41 mg of caffeine either way. Cherry is 42 g against 0 g for Cherry Zero Sugar (40 mg of caffeine against 41), and Cherry Vanilla, at 38 g, pairs with Diet Cherry Vanilla rather than a Zero Sugar can. What 39 g a day means over a year is in how much sugar is in a can of Dr Pepper.
Which is healthier, Diet Dr Pepper or Dr Pepper Zero?
On the label, neither. Both are 0 calories, 0 g sugar, 0 g carbohydrate, 60 mg sodium and 41 mg caffeine per 12 fl oz can. Against regular Dr Pepper, either one takes out 150 calories and 39 g of added sugar a can, with no change in caffeine. Both contain aspartame, so both carry the PKU line. Between the two there is nothing to choose nutritionally; pick on taste.
Across the whole lineup the answer is the same. No soda is a health drink, and on the label the cans that do the least are the 9 sugar-free flavors: 0 calories and 0 g of sugar, with 60 to 65 mg of sodium, 1 g of carbohydrate on Blackberry Zero Sugar alone, and the usual 41 mg of caffeine unless the can says caffeine free. If caffeine is the concern, the answer narrows to Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper, the one can with no sugar and no caffeine. Dr Pepper Made with Real Sugar is not a lighter option: its label matches the original exactly, and cane sugar in place of corn syrup is the whole change. What a daily full-sugar habit does over time is the subject of is Dr Pepper bad for you, and the way out of one is in how to cut back.
Which Dr Pepper has the least sugar, calories and caffeine? All 18 flavors
Tap a column heading to sort. Every Diet and Zero Sugar can is 0 g of sugar and 0 calories. Full-sugar cans run from 38 g (Cherry Vanilla) to 42 g (Cherry). Caffeine is 41 mg almost everywhere: Cherry is 40 mg and the two caffeine-free cans are 0.

Cherry Vanilla and Diet Cherry Vanilla list caffeine as an ingredient but Keurig Dr Pepper publishes no current amount, so they sort last on caffeine rather than being given a guess. The whole table is also available as plain JSON.
Which Dr Pepper has the most caffeine?
They are all 41 mg, give or take one. Keurig Dr Pepper lists 41 mg per 12 fl oz can for the original, Diet, Zero Sugar, Made with Real Sugar and every fruit and cream flavor with a published figure. Dr Pepper Cherry is the one exception, one milligram lower at 40 mg. One wrinkle: Keurig Dr Pepper's product-facts site also holds an unlisted second record for the original can at about 43 mg. I go with 41: it is the record the Dr Pepper brand listing links to, CSPI's chart agrees, and the 7.5, 16.9 and 20 fl oz labels (26, 58 and 68 mg) all scale from 41, not 43. There is no high-caffeine Dr Pepper; the 20 fl oz bottles reach 66 to 68 mg because they hold more. By size and against coffee and the colas, the numbers are in how much caffeine is in Dr Pepper. Comparing against Coke or Pepsi rather than another Dr Pepper? That is Dr Pepper vs Coke vs Pepsi.
How much sugar and caffeine is in your daily Dr Pepper habit?
Pick a flavor and how many cans a day. This adds up the sugar, calories and caffeine against the American Heart Association and FDA daily figures, a cup of coffee, the colas, Mountain Dew and Diet Coke, and turns a week of cans into McDonald's cheeseburgers, Quarter Pounders, Big Macs or Burger King Whoppers. If the flavor has a sugar-free twin, it also shows what switching would save over a year.

- A week of that is 2,100 calories, about 7 McDonald's cheeseburgers at 300 calories each. Over a year it is 109,500 calories, 365 of them, and 28,470 g of sugar, roughly 28.5 kg (62.8 lb).
- Switching the same 2 cans to Dr Pepper Zero Sugar keeps the 82 mg of caffeine a day and drops 78 g of sugar a day: 28.5 kg (62.8 lb) and 109,500 calories a year.

Diet Dr Pepper vs Zero: more questions
Is Dr Pepper Zero the same as Diet Dr Pepper?
No. The nutrition labels match, but the recipes do not: Dr Pepper Zero Sugar adds a second sweetener, acesulfame potassium, plus sodium phosphate to the aspartame that Diet Dr Pepper uses on its own. They are separate products, and both are in the current lineup on drpepper.com.
How many calories are in Dr Pepper Zero?
None. A 12 fl oz can of Dr Pepper Zero Sugar lists 0 calories, and so does the 20 fl oz bottle. Regular Dr Pepper is 150 calories a can and 240 in a 20 fl oz bottle.
Does Dr Pepper Zero have aspartame?
Yes. Aspartame is the fourth ingredient on the Dr Pepper Zero Sugar label, with acesulfame potassium further down. Diet Dr Pepper has aspartame too, as its only sweetener, and every Zero Sugar flavor on this page uses the same aspartame and acesulfame potassium pair. Keurig Dr Pepper does not publish how many milligrams are in a can.
Is Dr Pepper Zero Sugar good for diabetes?
I cannot answer that for you, and neither can the label. What the label shows: 0 g of total carbohydrate and 0 g of sugar per 12 fl oz can, sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium instead of sugar. Diet Dr Pepper is the same on both counts. Regular Dr Pepper has 40 g of carbohydrate, 39 g of it sugar. Whether a sugar-free soda fits a diabetes plan is a question for your doctor or a registered dietitian.
Which has more caffeine, Diet Dr Pepper or Dr Pepper Zero?
Neither. Keurig Dr Pepper lists 41 mg per 12 fl oz can for both, the same as regular Dr Pepper. Taking the sugar out does not take the caffeine out. The only Dr Peppers without caffeine are Caffeine Free Dr Pepper and Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper.
Which Dr Pepper flavors are caffeine free?
Two: Caffeine Free Dr Pepper and Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper, both at 0 mg. Every other current flavor has caffeine. The fruit and cream flavors carry the same 41 mg as the original, Cherry is 40 mg, and Cherry Vanilla and Diet Cherry Vanilla contain caffeine but have no published figure.
Which Dr Pepper flavors have no sugar?
Nine of the 18 current flavors: Diet Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar, Caffeine Free Diet Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Cherry Zero Sugar, Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Blackberry Zero Sugar, Dr Pepper Cream Soda Zero Sugar, Dr Pepper Strawberries & Cream Zero Sugar, Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut Zero Sugar. All of them list 0 g of sugar and 0 calories per 12 fl oz can. Diet, Caffeine Free Diet and Diet Cherry Vanilla are sweetened with aspartame; the six Zero Sugar cans use aspartame plus acesulfame potassium.
Does Dr Pepper Cherry have more sugar than regular Dr Pepper?
Yes, slightly. A 12 fl oz can of Dr Pepper Cherry has 42 g of sugar and 160 calories against 39 g and 150 calories for the original. It is the highest-sugar can in the lineup. Cherry Vanilla, at 38 g, is the lowest of the full-sugar flavors.
