A dirty Dr Pepper is Dr Pepper with a shot of flavored syrup and a splash of cream, usually coconut syrup, half and half and a squeeze of lime, poured over a glass full of pebble ice. There is no alcohol in it. "Dirty" just means something has been added to the soda, the way a dirty chai has espresso in it.
The drink comes out of Utah, where dirty sodas started as a treat for people who abstain from alcohol and coffee, and became a business with chains like Swig; Eater traces how it went mainstream on TikTok in 2022. Dr Pepper and Diet Coke are two of the most popular bases. The coconut, cream and lime version got popular enough that in March 2024 Coffee-mate and Dr Pepper released a limited-edition Dirty Soda Coconut Lime creamer made for exactly this drink.
One honest note before the recipe: this is the common soda-shop build, written up from how the drink is described rather than one I have taken through my own kitchen yet, so treat my proportions as a starting point and adjust to taste.
What is McDonald's dirty Dr Pepper?
McDonald's sells its own Dirty Dr Pepper as a "crafted flavored soda": Dr Pepper with a touch of vanilla flavor, topped with chilled cold foam, in small, medium and large, at 330 calories for a medium. It is a vanilla-and-cream build rather than the coconut-and-lime one above. To make my suggested copycat at home (my proportions, not McDonald's published recipe), pour Dr Pepper over ice with 1 tablespoon of vanilla syrup, then spoon a little cold foam on top (cold cream whisked with a pinch of sugar until it just thickens). McDonald's also lists a Reduced Sugar Dirty Dr Pepper made with Diet Dr Pepper.
Why Dr Pepper works dirty
Dr Pepper already leans toward vanilla, cherry and almond, which is a lot of the way to a cream soda. Coconut and cream push it the rest of the way, and the lime cuts back through the sweetness so it does not turn into dessert. A cola base needs more help; Dr Pepper mostly needs ice. If you like the coconut note, Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut is the company's own canned take on the same idea.
Variations
- Dirty vanilla Dr Pepper: swap the coconut syrup for vanilla syrup and skip the lime.
- Lower-sugar dirty Dr Pepper: Dr Pepper Zero Sugar, a sugar-free coconut syrup, and a splash of half and half, which still carries a little milk sugar.
- Strawberries and cream: use Dr Pepper Strawberries & Cream as the base and leave out the syrup entirely.
- Grown-up version: a shot of coconut rum turns it into a cocktail, for adults of legal drinking age, so please drink responsibly. More of those are in the Dr Pepper drinks and cocktails guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is in a dirty Dr Pepper?
Dr Pepper, a flavored syrup (usually coconut), a splash of half and half or coconut cream, and a squeeze of lime, over pebble ice. There is no alcohol.
Why is it called a dirty Dr Pepper?
"Dirty" means the soda has had something mixed into it, in this case syrup and cream. The name comes from the dirty soda shops in Utah, where adding syrups and cream to soda became its own drink category.
Can you make a dirty Dr Pepper with Dr Pepper Zero?
Yes. Use Dr Pepper Zero Sugar with a sugar-free coconut or vanilla syrup. It will be lower in sugar, not sugar-free, because the cream adds some, so use a splash rather than a pour.
Does a dirty Dr Pepper have caffeine?
Yes, the same as the Dr Pepper in it: about 41 mg in a 12 fl oz can. The syrup and cream do not add any. The full breakdown is in how much caffeine is in Dr Pepper.
Can I order a dirty Dr Pepper at McDonald's?
Yes, at McDonald's restaurants in the US that carry it. It is on the menu as a crafted flavored soda in small, medium and large.
How do I make McDonald's dirty Dr Pepper at home?
For my suggested copycat, which is my own proportions rather than McDonald's recipe: Dr Pepper over ice, a tablespoon of vanilla syrup, and a spoonful of cold foam (cold cream whisked with a little sugar) on top. The coconut-and-lime version on this page is the other classic.
