Dr Pepper and vodka is a simple highball: 1 1/2 to 2 ounces of vodka over ice, topped with 4 to 6 ounces of cold Dr Pepper and a squeeze of lime. Plain vodka has very little flavor of its own, so I would expect the drink to taste mostly like Dr Pepper, which is exactly why it is easy to drink faster than you mean to. It is for adults of legal drinking age, so please drink responsibly.

This is the standard bar build, written up from how the drink is usually made rather than one I have taken through my own kitchen yet, so treat the ratio as a starting point.

Can you mix vodka and Dr Pepper?

Yes, and it is one of the simplest mixes there is. Because plain vodka is neutral, Dr Pepper's own cherry, vanilla and spice (the 23 flavors) should carry the whole drink. The lime is the one thing I would add every time, to cut some of the sweetness.

What is the best ratio?

The card's range, 1 1/2 to 2 ounces of vodka with 4 to 6 ounces of Dr Pepper, runs from 1:2 (2 ounces to 4, a strong pour) to 1:4 (1 1/2 ounces to 6, easier going). I would start in the middle at 1:3, 1 1/2 ounces to 4 1/2. Because you cannot taste plain vodka much in this drink, measure it with a jigger rather than eyeballing it.

The vanilla version is the one I would try first: I would expect vanilla vodka to push Dr Pepper toward a cream soda without making it heavier. The cream soda row is close to a boozy dirty Dr Pepper; add the cream last so it does not curdle against the soda's acidity. All of these are for adults of legal drinking age only.

Does vodka and Dr Pepper taste good?

If you like Dr Pepper, I would expect so, because plain vodka adds little flavor and the soda does most of the work. That is its strength and its catch. If you would rather taste the spirit, whiskey stands up to the soda better: try Jack and Dr Pepper, spiced rum and Dr Pepper or Dr Pepper and Fireball. For a vodka drink with more going on, the Dr Pepper Moscow mule adds ginger and lime. Everything else is in the Dr Pepper drinks and cocktails guide and the Dr Pepper recipes.

Frequently asked questions

How much vodka do you put in Dr Pepper?

About 1 1/2 to 2 ounces of vodka for 4 to 6 ounces of Dr Pepper, which works out between 1:2 and 1:4, in a glass full of ice. I would start at 1:3.

What flavored vodka goes best with Dr Pepper?

Vanilla and cherry are the natural matches, since both are already part of how Dr Pepper tastes. Whipped cream or cake vodkas work too but make the drink very sweet, so use a smaller pour.

Can you use Dr Pepper Zero Sugar?

Yes. Dr Pepper Zero Sugar or Diet Dr Pepper work the same way and cut the soda's sugar. Flavored vodkas may still contain some sugar, so check the bottle.

Does Dr Pepper and vodka have caffeine?

Yes, from the Dr Pepper. Keurig Dr Pepper's product facts give approximately 41 mg in a 12 fl oz can, so a drink with 4 to 6 ounces has roughly 14 to 21 mg. The CDC notes that caffeine does not reduce the effects of alcohol but can make you feel less affected than you are, so pace yourself.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 to 2 fl oz vodka (plain, vanilla or cherry)
  • 4 to 6 fl oz Dr Pepper, well chilled
  • 1 lime wedge
  • Ice
  • 1 maraschino cherry, to garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice.
  2. Add the vodka and squeeze in the lime wedge.
  3. Top with cold Dr Pepper, pouring slowly to keep the fizz.
  4. Stir once, gently, garnish with a cherry if you like, and serve.

Notes & tips

  • Start at 1 part vodka to 3 parts Dr Pepper (1 1/2 oz to 4 1/2 oz) and adjust within 1:2 to 1:4.
  • Plain vodka should mostly disappear into Dr Pepper; vanilla or cherry vodka should add to it.
  • For adults of legal drinking age only. Please drink responsibly.
